How To Overcome Life’s Challenges – Part 1

In this life, you will have challenges. They are inevitable. It’s part of the curse of the fall of man. However, God has made you and called you to be an overcomer. He has equipped you to win. So, no matter what challenges you face in life, you can always come out on top. You can defeat and prevail over any situation. Let’s look at some steps you can take in overcoming.

  1. Understand that trouble will come. This is the first step in overcoming – understanding. When you understand the nature of trouble then you won’t get “bent of shape” when it comes. When you don’t have understanding, trouble can have a negative effect on you mentally and emotionally. When you realize it’s just one of those things in life you have to deal with, it loses its power over your life.

6 “For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble spring from the ground; 7 Yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.” (Job 5:6-7)

In this passage, the writer is saying that trouble is a part of this life that we are living. When you were born into this world, you were born into a world of trouble. Trouble coming your way is just as natural as sparks flying upward.  Jesus reiterated this in John 16:33 when He said, “…In the world, you will have tribulation…” Jesus Himself acknowledges the reality of trouble. This is why He told His disciples in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” In other words, don’t worry about the future. Tomorrow is another day with it’s own set of challenges. Live in the present and deal with each day as it comes.

2.  Be of good cheer. This is what Jesus said in John 16:33,

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer…

This is the kind of attitude the believer should have in dealing with trouble. To be of good cheer literally means, “to have courage.” Jesus is saying, “Don’t let the trouble get you down. Don’t let it discourage you or make you unhappy. Stay in control of your emotions and conquer the trouble.”

…I have overcome the world.”

Jesus gives us the reason why we should be of good cheer. This is the foundation of our victory – Jesus has overcome the world.  If Jesus has overcome the world, then we have overcome the world. His victory is our victory. His triumph is our triumph. You’ve won before the trouble even comes. Now it’s your responsibility to walk in that victory that has been provided for you through Christ.

Another reason why you should be of good cheer is found in Nehemiah 8:10, “…Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” When you have a cheerful attitude, you strengthen yourself. You cannot overcome the challenges of life being weak and worn out. You have to be strong and courageous. You have to have mental fortitude and strength. Having joy brings about this strength.
